PDVSA had asked the legislature controlled by supporters of leftist President Hugo Chavez to take over the rigs after the US firm declined to negotiate a new service contract, unlike 32 other foreign firms.

The Gift of Obama
Posted by admin / Under Gift Basket
We really have no reason to be winning this health care debate. The Democrats were swept into the Oval Office with a sweeping mandate, they have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and a commanding majority in the House, and, at the beginning of the year, they were popular in the eyes of the public and had a plethora of political capital to spend. After spending some of it on the ill-conceived stimulus package, health care was next. One year ago at this time, I would have said: its done for. 100 Days: 'Harry, I Have a Gift'
Posted by admin / Under Gift Basket
opinion polls were real life, Barack Obama would be walking with the immortals. In polls taken as he headed to his 100th day, his numbers are high and heavenly, cruising on issue after issue at 70-plus percent. APOne number in last weekend's Washington Post/ABC poll, however, stands out. On whether he is "willing to listen to different points of view," Mr. Obama elevates into hyperspace, hitting 90%. Just behind is "he understands the problems of people like you," at 73%. An argument made repeatedly during the campaign by converts to the Obama movement was that this guy simply "gets it."...

Reid, D-Nev., writes: "'That speech was phenomenal, Barack,' I told him. And I will never forget his response. Without the barest hint of braggadocio or conceit, and with what I would describe as...

Hugo Chavez's gift to Obama is a Latin leftist's bible
Posted by admin / Under Gift Basket
Reporting from Mexico City -- The book that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez gave his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, has long been regarded as a bible for the Latin American left, found on the bookshelves and university reading lists of a generation of students in the region. "Open Veins of Latin America" recounts, as its subtitle says, "Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent" -- the harvesting of the region's cotton, rubber, coffee, fruit and other resources by U.S. and European powers. It argues, from a Marxist viewpoint, that such exploitation is the root cause of Latin American poverty.
